United States regulatory agencies rely on guidance and policies that utilize whole effluent toxicity (WET) for monitoring of waters. Where adverse effects are observed, waters are assessed by the toxicity reduction evaluation (TRE) at times in conjunction with toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) to identify the causes of observed effects.
