Description

Editors: Mary C. Reiley, William A. Stubblefield, William J. Adams, Dominic M. Di Toro, Russell J. Erickson, Peter V. Hodson, F. James Keating Jr.

First developed in the 1950s, water-quality criteria (WQC) have emerged as primary tools for managing surface water quality. The need to integrate and harmonize approaches for developing criteria for water, sediments, and tissues prompted 50 experts from North America, Europe, and New Zealand to review the rapidly evolving science and methods for deriving WQC that protect numerous organisms and endpoints. Representing academia, government, and industry, these scientists identify problems with current approaches, assess recent advances in environmental toxicology and chemistry, and recommend a 3-level system for broadly applicable and site-specific criteria.
