SETAC Journals Call for Papers: NAMs and Soil Assessment

Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (ET&C) and Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management (IEAM) are now accepting submissions for special issues focused on critical topics in environmental science

ET&C and IEAM Joint Series: Environmental Risk Assessment of Soils: From Regulatory Frameworks to Realistic On-site Risk Predictions of Contaminants, Mixtures and Stressors for the Environment

Guest Editors: Paola Grenni, Pia Kotschik, Mireia Marti, Juliska Princz and Olukayode Jegede

Submissions Due: 31 December 2025

This special joint series (ET&C and IEAM) aims to gather contributions on the understanding of soil contamination and resulting environmental risk in Europe and other countries where rapid pollution development is taking place, also in view of changing environmental conditions. Research that use field observations, monitoring as well as experimental data, and scientific modeling to explore the complexity and uncertainty associated with soil contamination and resulting risks are encouraged for submission to ET&C. For IEAM, submissions should focus on publishing research that supports ecotoxicology and risk assessment for in-soil organisms, innovative methodologies, environmental decision-making and problem-solving, with particular emphasis on science-informed regulations, policies, and decisions.

Articles submitted to this joint special series should highlight new knowledge related to the assessment and management of soil ecotoxicity and chemistry, with the goal of understanding effects of chemicals on soil ecosystems and their protection. Submissions can also include new laboratory techniques, approaches and systems to investigate these scientific questions, as well as frameworks and discussions on how such insights can be translated into science-informed management and decision-making in a changing environment.

IEAM Call for Papers: Getting New Approach Methods (NAMs) into Environmental Assessment, Management, and Practice

Guest Editors: Nil Basu, Paris Jeffcoat, Gordon Hickey and Steve Maguire

Submissions Due: 31 December 2025

Regulatory agencies worldwide are calling for new approach methods (NAMs). NAMs are defined as “any technology, methodology, approach or combination thereof that can be used to replace, reduce, or refine animal toxicity testing and allow for more rapid or effective prioritization and/or assessment of chemicals.” NAMs can be existing methods, and what makes them new is their fit for purpose use in a regulatory context and/or their purposeful design to reduce the reliance or need for animal-based tests. There is also interest in methods that are scalable for high-throughput delivery and ones that yield mechanistic insights.

The objective of this special series is to showcase studies detailing how NAMs are being developed to meet adopter needs (e.g., within government and industry), as well as how NAMs are being used to inform regulation, policy, and decision making. The special series will also highlight how NAMs are being applied in cases of environmental risk (and/or impact) assessment and management. The research insights and perspectives in this special series will aim to reflect the interconnectedness of the scientific, social, and environmental challenges that shape advances in regulatory science innovation. As such, this special series welcomes interdisciplinary and social sciences research that aims to understand and explain NAMs, including barriers and opportunities towards their validation, standardization, international harmonization, and regulatory implementation.  We welcome all article types published by IEAM.
