Coastal territories are vital ecosystems that support human activities by providing a wide range of ecosystem services (ES). However, these ecosystems face increasing anthropogenic pressures due to urbanization, shipping, overexploitation of aquatic resources, and the expansion of recreational and tourist activities. Current decision-making tools for sustainable management often fail to adequately account for the impacts of human activities on ES in both a lifecycle and multicriteria perspective. The Cost to Coast (C2C) project aims to bridge these gaps by proposing a novel conceptual framework to consistently address ecosystem services at a territorial scale from a life cycle perspective. The project was coordinated by CIRAIG (Cécile Bulle) and INRAE (Arnaud Hélias & Eléonore Loiseau) from 2020 to 2024. This closing seminar is an opportunity to discuss the main results with the LCA community with a particular emphasis on: > Revisiting the Territorial Life Cycle Assessment framework to account for ecosystem service > Proposing a new area of protection as well as impact pathways for ecosystem service in LCIA including adaptation capacity > Creating a new set of LCIA indicators to quantify the potential loss of aquatic ecosystem services, integrated into the IMPACT World+ method > Applying the methodological proposals and developed indicators to two case studies, in close collaboration with local stakeholders: the Thau Lagoon in France, and the St. Lawrence River estuary in Quebec.
Target Group
Researchers, academics, decision-makers to discuss the interest and research needs to comprehensively assess environmental impacts and ES in a life cycle perspective to support sustainable land planning
