The SETAC Asia-Pacific Student Research Grant supports student-led research that advances environmental chemistry and/or toxicology in the Asia-Pacific region by providing opportunities for professional development, collaboration, or the generation of new research outcomes.

There are up to two awards of AUD$3,000. The winners will be announced at the SETAC Asia-Pacific Conference in Tsukuba, Japan 20 – 23 September 2026.

Grant Application Information

Eligibility: Full SETAC Asia-Pacific student members (inclusive of the Australasian and Japan regional chapters)

Grant applications must include the following information:

  1. Applicant’s full name
  2. Project title
  3. Applicant’s email address
  4. Applicant’s institution and country
  5. SETAC membership type
  6. SETAC subscription number
  7. Years of SETAC membership
  8. Project commencement date

An outline of the research proposal with the following content:

  1. Background and referencing. This should provide an appropriate review of literature to provide context for the research proposal. (maximum 300 words).
  2. Significance and innovation. Provides a clear outline of the study aims and objectives. Demonstrates the study’s significance to the field of environmental chemistry and/or toxicology within the SETAC Asia-Pacific region. Demonstrates innovation in the research question, methodology, application, or expected outcomes. (maximum 300 words).
  3. Experimental design, methods, and feasibility. Demonstrates that the experimental design is suitable for the study objectives. The presented methods are clear and sufficiently detailed. The project can realistically be completed within the proposed timeframe and resources (maximum 1 page).
  4. Project budget. This is best presented in a table format. The budget should be appropriate for the SETAC Asia-Pacific grant program (up to AUD $3,000) and well justified. If the total project budget exceeds AUD $3,000, the application clearly explain how the remaining costs will be funded (maximum 1 page).
  5. Advancement of environmental chemistry and/or toxicology. Considers how the project outputs will specifically advance our knowledge of environmental chemistry and/or toxicology, as opposed to simply being a project in the discipline area. (maximum 100 words).
  6. Track record relative to opportunity. Evidence of activities demonstrating commitment to SETAC’s mission to advance environmental science and management, such as publications, presentations, outreach activities, contributions to SETAC, leadership activities, mentoring, other evidence of achievement. Track record will consider career stage, research opportunities available to the applicant, caring responsibilities, interruptions to study, institutional resources, and other relevant circumstances. (maximum 1 page).
  7. Endorsement of supervisor. Confirms that the applicant is enrolled as a student and that the proposed work is feasible within available facilities and approvals. This may be a short statement or email attached to the application.
