Scope of the Meeting

Uniting Students Through Connections

The meeting theme of “Uniting Students Through Connections” captures the notion that networking and building connections amongst young scientists is critical to the continued success of quality environmental management, given the difficult changes that global science is currently facing.

Sessions

1 Analytical Challenges in Environmental Sciences

Keywords: analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, method development and validation, troubleshooting, legacy and emerging contaminants, (non)targeted analysis

As anyone who conducts research knows, unexpected challenges are an everyday reality in science. This session will focus on analytical challenges of broad interest to the environmental science community, including problems previously overlooked, new approaches to common issues and lessons learned.

2 Aquatic Ecotoxicology

Keywords: marine and freshwater systems, toxicity testing, chemical pollution, multiple stressors

This session will focus on research that investigates the impacts of various toxins and toxicants on aquatic life and ecosystems, including those from freshwater, estuarine, coastal and marine environments.

3 Computational Ecotoxicology and Environmental Modeling

Keywords: in silico methods, effect modeling, mechanistic modeling, machine learning, predictive modeling, model validation

This session will include research that uses computer-based (in silico) approaches to study environmental toxicology and chemistry topics, such as new modeling approaches or novel applications of computational toxicology methods.

4 Contaminants of Emerging Concern—Microplastics, PFAS, Pharmaceuticals and More

Keywords: organic pollutants, microplastics, PFAS, PPCPs, TRWP, 6PPD, fate and transport, risk assessment, monitoring

This session will include research that seeks to understand the impacts of contaminants of emerging concern on the environment, including microplastics, tire and road wear particles, PFAS, pharmaceuticals and more.

5 New Approach Methodologies

Keywords: New Approach Methods (NAMs), in vitro methods, high-throughput screening, read-across, chemical safety and sustainability, omics-based approaches

As the ecotoxicology community seeks to minimize the use of animal testing, new approach methodologies are increasingly in demand. This session is intended for studies that use these novel methods as an alternative to animal testing to conduct ecotoxicology research, including omics-based studies.

6 One Health

Keywords: One Health, human health, environmental health, animal health, veterinary medicine, humans and the environment, anthropogenic interactions, interdisciplinary

The "One Health" concept emphasizes that human health, animal health, and environmental health are all interconnected. Therefore, all three of these topics should be considered when developing approaches to study any one of them. This session will include research that seeks to use multidisciplinary techniques as part of a "One Health" approach to the study of environmental toxicology and chemistry topics.

7 Policy, Management and Communication

Keywords: environmental management, policymaking, community engagement, citizen science, risk communication, science communication, extension

This session welcomes presentations about the application of science to policymaking, environmental management and community engagement. Lessons learned about best practices for communicating science to audiences outside of the scientific community are also welcome.

8 Terrestrial Ecotoxicology

Keywords: terrestrial systems, toxicity testing, chemical pollution, multiple stressors, soil, land-use change, wildlife ecotoxicology

This session will center on research relevant to the ecotoxicology of terrestrial life--any wildlife that is not strictly aquatic. Presentations focusing on any type of terrestrial organism or ecosystem are welcome.
