About the Fund

The SETAC North America Endowment Fund was established in 2005 to develop and grow invested funds in perpetuity in order to annually generate investment proceeds for use in supporting technical, scientific and educational activities consistent with the society’s mission. Contributions to the fund are received through a combination of current and planned (future) gifts by SETAC members, their home organizations and other philanthropic groups.

Fundraisers at the annual meetings, generous contributions by legacy donors, and all the smaller contributions from hundreds of SETAC North America members have allowed the fund to grow so that we can reserve the principal in the fund and use proceeds to support activities consistent with SETAC’s mission. We have been able to support students at the annual meetings and Pellston Workshops®, as well as early-career scientists.

Thanks to all of the contributing members for their support!

Herb Ward Endowment Fund Challenge

We invite you to join us in meeting the Herb Ward Endowment Fund Challenge! The challenge is to raise the endowment fund to $400,000 by the SETAC North America 40th Annual Meeting in 2019. You can do so in a number of ways. If all regular members pledge $40 per year for 4 years, we’ll exceed the goal! Of course, any amount is welcome and will help us reach the goal. You can also support the fund by shopping online via (instead of the regular Just select “SETAC” as your charity of choice, and Amazon will give back a small percent of each sale as a donation.

How the Fund Operates

The Endowment Fund Board of Trustees operates under the purview of the SETAC North America Development Committee, and the annually audited fund is managed by the SETAC North America Secretary–Treasurer. SETAC North America, in consultation with the Endowment Fund Board of Trustees and the Society Board of Directors will have the authority to accept current and planned (future) gifts, grants and contributions to enhance the invested fund principal.

Seven substantial planned gifts, matching gifts and two C. Herb Ward Challenge Grants have already been committed to the fund, and two authors have committed a portion of proceeds from future book sales. In addition, a number of recognition and memorial gifts and Legacy Society contributions of $1,000 or more have been received since 2006. With continuing financial support, the Endowment Fund principal will continuously grow, generating annual support for worthy projects including student functions, special symposia, technical meetings, briefings and annual meeting activities consistent with the society's mission. The amount of distributed annual support depends upon the size of the fund. So please help us continue the fund’s success by making a contribution.
