The SETAC North America Endowment Fund was established in 2005 to develop and grow invested funds in perpetuity in order to annually generate investment proceeds for SETAC’s use in supporting technical, scientific and educational activities consistent with our Society’s mission. Contributions to the Fund are received through a combination of current, planned and future gifts by SETAC members, their home organizations and other philanthropic groups. In 2012, your Endowment Fund achieved a record-breaking fundraising year, exceeded an important invested principal threshold of $100,000 and will continue to grow through generous membership contributions. Since 2009, with assistance from the SETAC NA Board of Directors, approximately $6,000 has been annually distributed through the Fund to support student and early career faculty participation in our Annual Meetings and to enhance and expand Society membership. In 2013, for the first time, the Fund will distribute $10,000 for Society use and will initiate balanced and diversified investments to grow the Fund consistent with the Society management plan. These are critical accomplishments for the Fund and the Board of Trustees thanks all of the contributing members for their support. More than a third of our SETAC North America members have contributed on one or more occasions since 2005! We must continue to grow the Fund and we urge your continuing financial support to ensure an ongoing commitment to our Society’s important mission which is to encourage responsible environmental management decision-making informed by sound environmental science principles.
How the Fund Operates
The Endowment Fund Board of Trustees operates under the purview of the SETAC North America Development Committee and the annually-audited Fund is managed by the SETAC North America Secretary-Treasurer. SETAC North America, in consultation with the Fund Board of Trustees and Society Board of Directors will have the authority to accept current and planned (future) gifts, grants and contributions to enhance the invested Fund principal. Seven substantial planned gifts and a 2012 C. Herb Ward Challenge Grant have already been committed to the Fund and two authors have committed a portion of future proceeds from future book sales to the Fund. In addition, a number of recognition and memorial gifts and Legacy Society contributions ($1,000 or more) have been received by the Fund since 2006. With continuing financial support, the Endowment Fund principal will continuously grow generating annual support for worthy projects including student functions, specialty symposia, technical meetings, briefings and annual meeting activities so long as these programs are consistent with the society’s mission. The amount of distributed annual support depends upon the size of the Fund. Please join us in celebrating the Fund’s success by making a contribution.
