Join Us at the SETAC Europe 26th LCA Symposium in Gothenburg

Maria Rydberg, Greg Peters and Stina Hallman, Chalmers University of Technology

Planning for the SETAC Europe 26th LCA Symposium is well underway. The symposium will take place in Gothenburg, Sweden, from 21–23 October 2024. Over the span of two and a half days, this conference will play host to professionals from academia, research institutions, industry, government agencies, consultancies and NGOs, providing you with a platform to meet and exchange new insights, present research findings and participate in discussions centered around life cycle assessment (LCA).

The symposium is being organized jointly by SETAC Europe and the Swedish Life Cycle Center, which is based in Gothenburg. This is the first time since the pandemic that the symposium will be held in real life in a vibrant city. Gothenburg is Sweden's second-biggest city and often considered the heart of Scandinavia. It is home to Michelin-starred restaurants, diverse cultural scenes, sustainable living initiatives and beautiful green spaces. Gothenburg is a world-leading destination for sustainable meetings and events as demonstrated by rating #1 on the GDS Index in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022 and #1 in past ICCA Scandinavia Sustainability Index editions, and it was named the World's Best Sustainable City Stay in 2021 by Lonely Planet.

The theme for the conference is: "Making LCA meaningful: Good data, better models, sustainable decisions," which underscores the symposium's focus on enhancing the entire process of life cycle assessment to bring about positive changes. This theme was chosen with the intention of being inclusive, whether you want to present your work or mostly listen. We welcome practical case studies and methodological contributions related to all kinds of uses of LCA, whether for product innovation, policy development, communication or other purposes. Likewise, the scope of the conference is not limited to particular applications – we hope that practitioners and theorists working on energy systems, water services, agriculture, transport, manufacturing, clothing, retailing, waste management and many other industry sectors will be able to learn from each other as well as from peers in their own industry sectors. Soon, we will announce a call for sessions and look forward to user, sector and method-related suggestions. The symposium aims to make a contribution towards improving the science and practice of how we gather data about products and services throughout their lifecycle, how we model the technical systems that deliver the produces and services, how we assess their impact on the environment, and how the outcomes are used in decision-making.  We believe that doing these things will help to maintain and improve the traction of LCA in practice.

The symposium will offer an inclusive scientific program that features presentations, discussions, workshops and opportunities for social interactions, all designed to promote networking and collaboration. The call for sessions has now opened and is welcoming proposals until 23 January.

For organizations seeking to raise their profile in the field of LCA, the symposium offers options for sponsorship and exhibition. Anticipating the attendance of around 200 influential researchers and decision-makers, this event presents a global stage to showcase products and services, while also emphasizing commitments to sustainability.

With the conference's ability to foster meaningful discussions, share knowledge and encourage joint efforts for well-informed and sustainable decision-making through strong practices in life cycle assessment, the SETAC Europe 26th LCA Symposium is positioned to play a key role in showcasing innovative ideas and shaping a more sustainable future.
