Women in SETAC as Drivers of Global Sustainability in Environmental Science, Policy and Practice

15:25–16:45 SAST | US$10
Conveners: Beatrice Opeolu and Gertie Arts

Open to women across the globe!

The number of women in SETAC has grown steadily over the years, particularly in Africa. However, many of the challenges they face persist. While there has been some recent progress, significant work reamins to be done.

SAFWE sessions aim to foster authentic leadership development and promote the setting of measurable, achievable goals for participants. SAFWE was first convened in 2017 and has been held at every SETAC Africa meeting since then, engaging, inspiring and supporting more than 100 women in science. The sessions help attendees grow professionally, expand their networks and build collaborations with women across the globe. With the theme “Women in SETAC as Drivers of Global Sustainability in Environmental Science, Policy, and Practice,” SAFWE is once again set to empower SETAC women at the SETAC 9th World Congress / SETAC Africa 12th Biennial Meeting.

Participants will be welcomed into a safe space to share experiences, challenges and successes, and to identify needs and opportunities. The meeting aims to empower women scientists in their professional journey. Strategies for maintaining the delicate balance between career and personal responsibilities will be shared. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with peers and inspiring women from across the global SETAC community, and to brainstorm how SETAC can better serve its diverse membership, including female scientists.

Seats for SAFWE are limited and tend to fill up quickly. Interested participants are encouraged to register early! Registration fee for the event is $10 (U.S.). Limited funding support may be available for a few registered attendees of the World Congress who are unable to cover the SAFWE registration fee.

We are excited for you to join us. See you soon in Johannesburg!
