SETAC Europe Thanks Karel for Keeping the Ship Steady as Interim Executive Director

Regular Globe readers will recall that SETAC Europe’s long-standing Executive Director Bart Bosveld stepped down at the start of 2025 to focus on his role as SETAC Global Executive Director. This lead SETAC Europe to appoint Karel as interim executive director while running a full search to fill the position. The SETAC Europe Board of Directors is extremely grateful to Karel for his tireless dedication to SETAC as an organization and to SETAC governance.
As interim director, Karel helped the board to successfully navigate the transition period and took on a number of projects, including:
- Updating SETAC Europe guidance and policy documents to ensure that the theory and practice are aligned
- Focussing on the regional branches and how SETAC Europe can support them more
- Exploring the complicated VAT landscape in Europe for non-profits to help reveal possible changes that allow for greater VAT recovery
- Implementing training for board members in the legal and fiduciary responsibilities of board membership.
With the appointment of Jill Murray as the new SETAC Europe Executive Director, Karel returns full-time to his professorial role at Ghent University but remains a prominent member of the SETAC community, and we are confident that he will continue to take on additional SETAC governance roles in a voluntary capacity in the future.
