Seeking Expressions of Interest for the SETAC Publications Committee

SETAC is seeking expressions of interest from SETAC full members who would like to serve as a regular member of the SETAC Publications Committee.

The Publications Committee provides strategic advice to the SETAC Board of Directors on the Society’s publications and communications portfolio, including the journals Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (ET&C) and Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management (IEAM), SETAC Books, SETAC Globe, SETAC News, Technical Issue Papers, Science Briefs, and other publications and communications.

Role of the Committee

The Committee operates at a strategic and policy level. It advises the Board on matters such as:

  • the strategic direction and positioning of SETAC publications and communications
  • the performance, relevance, reputation and financial sustainability of the publication portfolio
  • emerging developments in scientific publishing and environmental science
  • publication policies, guidelines and ethics
  • publisher relationships and major publishing initiatives
  • appointment, reappointment and succession of editors-in-chief

Editorial independence is fundamental to the committee’s work. Committee members do not review manuscripts, participate in editorial decisions, interfere with peer review or direct the day-to-day production of SETAC publications and communications.

Who We Are Looking For

We welcome applications from SETAC full members with relevant experience or expertise in areas such as:

  • scholarly publishing and scientific journals
  • environmental science and its emerging fields
  • research assessment, science communication or dissemination
  • publishing strategy, digital publishing or open science
  • publishing ethics and research integrity
  • financial or business aspects of scholarly publishing
  • SETAC’s sectors and geographic regions

In selecting members, the committee chair and vice-chair will seek an appropriate balance of sector, geographic region, scientific and professional expertise, and perspectives.

Commitment

Committee members are expected to:

  • participate actively in committee meetings
  • review materials and contribute to discussions and recommendations
  • remain informed about developments relevant to the Committee’s scope
  • contribute to projects, reviews and reports as appropriate

The Committee normally meets periodically during the year, primarily by videoconference. Initial appointments may be for one, two or three years to establish staggered terms. Subsequent terms are three years, with a maximum of two consecutive terms, subject to performance and board approval. The expected workload for committee members is approximately four hours per month, on average.

How to Express Your Interest

SETAC full members interested in serving on the Committee are invited to submit:

  1. A brief statement of interest (maximum [500] words), describing your relevant experience, expertise and motivation for serving
  2. A current CV or professional profile

Expressions of interest should be submitted by 11 December to the Global Executive Director as the Secretary of the Publications Committee, at [email protected].

Following the open application process, the committee chair and vice-chair will recommend candidates to the SETAC Board of Directors for appointment.
