I have for over three decades been addressing integrated, cross-disciplinary environmental research, assessment, management and policy. I am currently the Director of SEA Environmental Decisions, Ltd., an independent consultancy, which provides technical and policy support and input on issues of ecosystem-based freshwater and marine environmental management, playing an integrating role in interdisciplinary programs in which basic and applied research are critically assessed and linked to environmental decisions, policy, and applications, bridging the gaps between scientists, engineers, policy makers, and the public. I am the Editor in Chief of the SETAC journal Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management. I have led or collaborated on a broad range of environment projects, and have authored or co-authored many papers, book chapters and reports on various aspects of environmental assessment and management. In the US, I sat on a number of government, academic and industry expert and advisory panels; in Europe, I have continued this work, providing advice, technical and policy support to a range of government, academic and industry groups in Europe, North America and Asia on ecosystem, terrestrial, river basin, freshwater, coastal and marine assessment, management and policy. Specialties include multi-scale, multi-stressor and ecosystem-based frameworks; freshwater, marine and sediment environmental and ecological assessment, management and policy; prospective and retrospective ecological risk assessment (ERA) and ecosystem response assessment (EcoResA); ecosystem service (EsS)-based assessment and policy; design, review and synthesis of integrated field programs; and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA); in situ and on-site sensor validation (for terrestrial and aquatic systems); PAH assessment, fate and biodegradation studies; technology assessment, integration, and transfer; and environmental security.
