About Rômulo Penna

Senior researcher with more than two decades of experience in pesticide environmental risk assessment, environmental fate and transport of pesticides, exposure modeling, and pesticide residue monitoring in tropical agricultural systems. His work integrates field experimentation, analytical chemistry, mathematical modeling, and regulatory science to develop Brazilian exposure scenarios for aquatic and soil organisms and support evidence-based pesticide risk assessment. He has led and contributed to national and international research projects, published peer-reviewed and technical outputs, advised graduate students, reviewed manuscripts and research proposals, and served on technical groups supporting environmental risk assessment in Brazil.  Researcher at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), at the Embrapa Western Agriculture research Unit, in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. His expertise includes pesticide environmental risk assessment, pesticide fate in soil and water, exposure modeling, soil physics, and pesticide residue analysis. His work integrates monitoring data, field experiments, and predictive models to support environmental protection and regulatory decision-making under Brazilian agricultural conditions.

Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Wageningen University & Research, The Netherlands, 2002. Thesis: Pesticide leaching in macroporous clay soils: field experiment and modeling. Advisor: Sjoerd E. A. T. M. van der Zee; Co-advisor: Jos Boesten.

M.Sc. in Agronomy (Entomology), Federal University of Lavras, Brazil, 1997. Dissertation: Testing two models (CALF and PESTLA) for pesticide leaching of aldoxycabr in a Red-Yellow Latosol in Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Advisor: Renê Rigitano

MBA in Project Management, University of São Paulo, Brazil, 2021.

B.Sc. in Agronomy, Federal University of Lavras, Brazil, 1994.
