Mission

The SETAC Europe LCA Interest Group is aimed at advancing the science, practice, and application of LCAs to reduce the resource consumption and environmental burdens associated with products, packaging, processes, or activities.

It serves as the focal point of a broad-based forum for the identification, resolution, and communication of issues regarding LCAs. Moreover, it facilitates, coordinates, and provides guidance for the development and implementation of LCAs, in collaboration with the LCA North America and, more recently, also with other societies that address the life cycle concepts in an interdisciplinary way. This is achieved by means of a series of initiatives that includes, among others, the planning and organization of LCA session at the annual meeting and conferences, such as the LCA Case Study Symposium.

Since 2011, the SETAC Europe LCA Interest Group has been joining the Global Coordinating Group (GCG), established as a mechanism for communication between the regional Interest Groups in Europe and North America and to allow the other Geographic Units to have representation in global SETAC LCA affairs. The mission of the LCA Global Coordinating Group within SETAC is to encourage and coordinate regional Interest Group efforts to advance the science, practice, and application of LCAs and ensure that a global perspective is maintained toward the achievement of LCA Interest Group objectives.

Miguel Fernandez Astudillo wrote on the Europe Interest Groups: Life Cycle Assessment wall: Dear all, What do you think about doing a LCA of the online edition of SETAC Europe? At least of the avoided travel. I have done a similar assessment of a (conventional) ACLCA conference a couple of years ago (https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11367-018-1479-z). I would just need a list of addresses of attendees that want to participate. From there, calculating the travel distance is quite straight forward, and there are good LCA inventories of air travel (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.trd.2017.10.017) . It would be fair to assume those outside Ireland would have come by plain. A personalised result could be sent to attendees willing to participate, and the aggregated results could be published e.g. in the SETAC journal. It would send a positive note to participants and it contribute to a discussion people care about. Best, Miguel F. Astudillo
