About the SETAC Café Series:
The SETAC Café Series is a SETAC Europe initiative that aims at keeping SETAC members connected, outside the yearly event atmosphere, and provide a format for SETAC members to share knowledge and engage in topical discussions.
The SETAC Café was first officially launched during the SETAC Europe 30th Annual Meeting (SETAC SciCon), as an informal get together at the end of each eventful day. Due to the high success rate and the many requests we received, SETAC Europe decided to follow up on this networking initiative and make it a monthly series. The SETAC Café will focus on a different topic each month. The topics will be presented by SETAC members, making this SETAC Café Series a free exclusive event for members by members.
SETAC members who wish to join the conversation are asked to register for the event. Registration is free. Only by registering, you will receive the Zoom call invitation to the SETAC Café edition of that month.
This month's edition will be held at 16:00 CET/10 CDT on Thursday, 29 October and focus on “Gender Equality and Diversity in Times of COVID-19.”
About the topic:
Gender Equality and Diversity in Times of COVID-19.
By Leonie Mueller, David MV Saunders, Lorraine Maltby and Michelle Bloor
During SETAC SciCon, a special session was hosted in which the chairs looked at gender, bias and equality through the lens of the COVID-19 crisis and its potential for broad and lasting effects. The re-focusing of the session on the COVID-19 pandemic filled a clear need to explore its impact and the resultant changes on our personal and professional lives. How are the pandemic’s quarantine and economic shutdowns affecting our perceptions of equality and challenging our preconceptions of what are reasonable expectations for home workers, especially those with caring responsibilities? The chairs used the designated discussion time to hear from the community and discuss how this unprecedented situation can be a chance for interaction, learning and the development of best practice, such as developing work structures that could be continued in our post-pandemic future. The scheduled talks by the chairs were deferred to future SETAC events, and instead, the chairs moderated a discussion around shared experiences and expertise on the topic. The discussion was guided by a real-time survey that aimed to collect experiences and opinions on specific aspects of this situation and how they affect our community.
After receiving a strong mandate from the audience, the chairs wanted to develop and explore this conversation further. During the SETAC Café, they plan to discuss and share the results of the survey, which is still ongoing, giving insights on how COVID-19 has affected the SETAC community.
Please could you complete the short survey to share your experiences during the COVID-19 outbreak, and how it has affected your work and well-being. The data of this survey will provide an interested conversation starter for the SETAC Café, and provide an interesting backdrop for SETAC members to reflect on their own experiences and observations.
