Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel for Chemicals, Waste and Pollution

On the 20th June 2025, at an Intergovernmental Meeting following on from 3.2 ad-hoc OEWG in Punta del Este, Uruguay, 107 Member States agreed to establish the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel for Chemicals, Waste and Pollution that will go by the acronym ISPCWP.

Highlights from the Intergovernmental Meeting can be found:

Highlights from the 3.2 ad-hoc OEWG meeting (14th to 19th June) in Punta del Este can be found:

SETAC's written statement that was submitted to UNEP prior to the 3.2 OEWG meeting can be found in the 'Documents' section of the CheM page. That statement called for the inclusion of stakeholders in the process and a suggestion that 'Honest Brokers' might be a solution to keep the Interdisciplinary Expert Group nimble but also providing a channel to receive and consider wider knowledge and expertise.

Moving forward, the CheM is hosting a session on the ISPCWP during the 9th SETAC World Congress, Johannesburg, South Africa, 29 September to 3 October 2025. The results from the Global Consultation on Chemicals Management that we have recently undertaken will be shared and discussed prior to publication, along with a conceptual framework that we have also developed and are in the process of publishing. The session will include multisectoral talks on topics linked to the ISPCWP, a panel discussion and interactive audience participation. We are also delighted to announce that Ms Tessa Goverse, Principal Officer at UNEP and the Secretariat for the OEWG will be a speaker at the session.
