Mission and Purpose
The SETAC Interest Group focused on IK&V was established in 2017 to provide a mechanism for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to collaborate through new research, publication of papers, mentor new members and provide a platform for Indigenous cultural knowledge input into the SETAC community. The IK&V IG will contribute to scientific environmental knowledge by identifying natural alignments between Indigenous and non-Indigenous knowledge systems and encourages Indigenous peoples to access high quality environmental science that informs decision-makers, inspiring more positive action and social, environmental, economic and cultural outcomes for Indigenous communities around the world.
The immediate goals of this IG in its year of inception are:
- Grow the IG by publicizing it and recruiting members interested in IK&V.
- Actively propose, organize and chair annual meeting sessions related to the topic.
- Produce a publication for submittal to SETAC journals (e.g., focus articles, critical review and critical perspectives) within the first two years.
- Seek funding and sponsorships to allow for the participation of Indigenous delegates at SETAC meetings.
