Life-cycle thinking is new to the working environment, but more and more companies are recognizing the potential impacts of their internal conditions, both within and outside their boundaries. During 6 meetings over a 3-year period, the authors reviewed existing methods, included 4 case studies, and produced suggestions for a common framework for integrating the working environment into LCA.

Pia Burnn Poulsen is Project Manager with FORCE Technology, Lyngby, Denmark, in the areas of life-cycle assessment, working environment, and product assessment and is co-ordinator of the efforts of the SETAC Working Group on LCA and the Working Environment.

Allan Astrup Jensen is Technical Vice President of FORCE Technology, chairman of the SETAC Working Group on LCA and the Working Environment, and chairman of a UNEP/SETAC task force on development of a life-cycle management handbook.
