The result of the third European Standard Characteristics Of beneficials Regulatory Testing (ESCORT 3) workshop, this book addresses questions about protecting non-target arthropods in the agricultural use of plant protection products. Nearly 60 scientists attended the workshop, representing a cross-section of regulatory authorities, academia, and the private sector, and focusing on four key topics:

  • Level of protection and testing scheme
  • Off-crop environment
  • Recovery
  • Field studies

The workshop deliberations produced a cogent series of conclusions and recommendations that build on the outputs from the first two ESCORTs:

  • Recommendations for regulation, including protection goals and risk assessment
  • Recommendations for research, including differences in sensitivity between in-crop and off-crop communities
  • Recommendations for education, including for those who conduct, monitor, and evaluate field studies, as well as risk and conservation management advice for farmers
