2016 Award Winners - Bryan Brooks

The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) will recognize Bryan Brooks, Professor of Environment Science and Biomedical Studies and Director of Environmental Health Science at Baylor University, with the Eugene Kenaga Membership Award on 6 November at the 7th SETAC World Congress/SETAC North America 37th Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.

SETAC is a scientific organization, relying on the time and energy of volunteers to grow membership and provide meaningful member services and leadership in elected and mentor roles. The Eugene Kenaga Membership Award recognizes a member whose efforts to cultivate development opportunities for the broader membership stand out. Brooks has been an active and engaged member from his graduate school days, growing his contributions from assisting with a silent auction to raise money for student activities at his first meeting to chairing technical sessions and workshops to holding leadership positions on regional and national SETAC boards. Most recently, he led international workshops on the ambitious Global Horizon Scanning Program (GHSP).

The GHSP is a systematic project designed to identify pressing, global research priorities in environmental science through a series of surveys and workshops held in conjunction with major international SETAC meetings. The results from this multi-year effort will be revealed at the SETAC World Congress and will drive SETAC programming. Brooks’ leadership on this project propelled it forward and engaged members in powerful ways. The priority rankings that result from this effort have the potential to influence research and policy decision in environmental science for a long time.

While Brooks spearheaded the GHSP, he continued to fulfill his responsibilities to the SETAC journals; he serves as an editor on both Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry and Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management. He also planned and chaired a focused topic meeting on the “Environmental Quality Implications of Unconventional Natural Gas Development,” which invited scientific leaders from academia, business and the private sector to assess the current state and potential ways forward in managing hydraulic fracturing.
