SETAC Pleased to Announce the Appointment of Bart Bosveld to Global Executive Director
Helena Silva de Assis, SETAC World Council President

The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) World Council is thrilled to announce the selection of Bart Bosveld for the position of SETAC Global Executive Director. Bosveld will assume the role on 1 October 2020, succeeding Charles Menzie, who is retiring.

A multi-sector, international panel served as the search committee and received 95 applications. Ten candidates were invited to interview, and of those, the top four were considered by the SETAC World Council. The evaluation criteria included scientific expertise, as well as experience with strategic planning, fundraising, grant procurement, nonprofit administration and community relations .

Helena Silva de Assis, SETAC World Council President and co-chair of the selection committee, reflected, “We received a lot of interest, and the search committee spent several months thoroughly evaluating the candidates to find the best person for the position.”  She went on to note that “ I am confident Bart will serve the global organization well. I offer my congratulations and look forward to working with him.”

Bosveld has a long and impressive history with SETAC and credentialed expertise in environmental science, receiving his PhD from Utrecht University in 1995. He served as the Executive Director of SETAC Europe from 2003–2009, before leaving to become Secretary/Director of the Dutch Board for the Authorisation of Plant Protection Products and Biocides at Ctgb. Bosveld returned to the position of SETAC Europe Executive Director in 2013 and has been pivotal in growing the annual meeting participation and member engagement and establishing collaborations with governmental and non-governmental organizations such as UN Environment, the European Commission, and several European chemical agencies.

Bosveld will bring that impressive CV to bear on his position at SETAC: “My entire professional career has been driven by environmental quality and how science can influence environmental solutions. I look forward to working with SETAC members and governance to advance environmental science so it may underpin policy decisions. I have always appreciated that SETAC influences and supports the careers of many individual members. My challenge and goal will be to bring people together to find ways that global collaboration can fill both environmental and professional needs.”

Bosveld will retain his position at SETAC Europe and expand his remit to include global matters.
