The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) in partnership with the Brazilian Federal Funding Agency (FINEP) and São Paulo State Research Funding Agency (FAPESP) are seeking proposals for research projects in the areas of sustainability and industrial ecology. The call for proposals are currently open, and the deadline to submit is 11 December 2017.

The areas of sustainability and industrial ecology were identified as research priorities for Latin America through the SETAC Global Horizon Scanning Project (GHSP). The GHSP surveyed scientists and engineers from around the globe in order to determine the most important future environmental research questions. The 20 topics of interest to Latin America are listed below. Proposals for other topics will be forthcoming.

Environmental Chemistry

  • The adsorption or release of toxic compounds from plastic waste
  • The impacts of pharmaceuticals in aquatic ecosystems
  • Quality criteria and the limits of environmental legislation
  •  The quantification of contaminant metabolites and breakdown products in abiotic and biotic matrices

  • The influence of climate change on the fate and effects of pollutants
  • Extrapolating the results from standardized single species toxicity test to local taxa and scenarios
  • Understanding the complexity of pesticide toxicology in ecosystems
  • Addressing ecological complexity with laboratory and field methods and approaches

Health, Contaminants of Emerging Concern and Environment

  • The impacts of nanomaterials on ecosystems and human health
  • How algal toxins spread and their potential risk to human health

Risk Assessment

  • Characterizing individual and combined risks of chemical contaminants
  • Developing and refining tools for the sustainable production and use of chemicals
  • Characterizing the potential effects of pulp mills effluents to humans and the environment

Environmental Management and Policy

  • Continuous improvement of the maximum limits of toxicity for agriculture, and domestic and industrial effluents, while maintaining ecosystem services
  • Current environmental regulations effectiveness and its implementation and enforcement in Latin America
  • Standardization and harmonization across Latin American countries
  • Effectiveness of protected areas in maintaining biodiversity
  • Improving solid waste risk management techniques

Spotlight on Latin America

  • Using ecotoxicity data from regional species for better prediction of impacts on local ecosystems
  • Impact evaluation of natural resources extraction
  • Tools for characterizing and classifying industrial and residential effluents

These questions are part of long-term strategic research plans in Latin America.
