Environmental risk assessors with more than 10 years of on-the-job experience can apply for direct registration as a SETAC Europe Certified Environmental Risk Assessor (CRA), without the need to undergo an exam in front of a review panel. The program was established in 2014 to provide an internationally recognized standard for environmental risk assessors.

For direct registration, applicants must:

  • Fulfill all required environmental risk assessment (ERA) competences and skills as described in the annexes of the CRA program guidance document.
  • Demonstrate commitment to continued education and training in ERA by regularly participating in activities such as specialized and professional development courses, trainings or summer schools, symposia, workshops or conferences.

The application dossier for direct registration should contain all of the following elements:

  • Name and current affiliation of applicant
  • Curriculum vitae with all pertinent information
  • Copies of relevant diplomas
  • A motivation letter by the applicant, including a self-evaluation and clear articulation that he or she has all required competences (see table 1 and annexes 1 and 2 in the CRA program guidance document) and a point-by-point review of all topics described in table 1, based on evidence in the curriculum vitae
  • Proof of having worked for a minimum of 10 years in an ERA environment (business or government)
  • A recommendation letter by an institution or company where the candidate has recently conducted an ERA job (or by the institution where he or she is currently working).
  • A recommendation letter by three SETAC members (one from academia, one from business, and one from government) as a proof of recognition by peers.
  • Proof of commitment to continued training and education by providing attendance certificates no older than two years for:
    • At least one ERA related specialized course, training or summer school, and
    • At least one ERA related symposium, workshop or conference (such as those organized by SETAC).

Any deviations from the above requirements should be articulated in the motivation letter.

Dossiers for direct enrollment must be submitted to the Registration Committee (, which will review the applications and bring them to the Certification Judging Panel for a final decision.

Submissions received before 20 May 2016 will be processed for free. A direct CRA certification fee will apply for the file’s evaluation and certification.
