SUMMARY:SETAC PSIG Webinar: "Stable isotope labeling in polymer biodegradation assessment: from research to regulation"
DESCRIPTION:The SETAC Persistence Science Interest Group (PSIG) is pleased to invite you to an upcoming scientific webinar featuring Prof. Michael Sander (ETH Zurich), a leading expert in environmental chemistry and polymer biodegradation.\n
 \n
 Webinar Overview\n
 \n
Biodegradability is increasingly recognized as a critical safe-and-sustainable-by-design criterion for polymers. Reliable assessment of polymer biodegradation is essential to prevent the accumulation of persistent polymers, including micro- and nanoplastics, in the environment. However, conventional biodegradation testing approaches face several challenges, including background interference, priming effects, difficulties in quantifying residual polymer carbon, and the inability to establish complete carbon mass balances.\n
 \n
In this webinar, Prof. Sander will demonstrate how stable isotope-labeled polymers can address these limitations and provide new mechanistic insights into polymer biodegradation processes. Drawing on studies with ¹³C-labeled structural and water-soluble polymers, he will illustrate how isotope tracing can improve interpretation of biodegradation experiments, quantify the fate of polymer-derived carbon, and distinguish mineralization from biomass formation.\n
 \n
The presentation will also explore the potential role of stable-isotope labeling in future regulatory assessments of polymer biodegradability, highlighting both commonalities with and advantages over traditional radioisotope-based approaches.\n
