Participation in the Microplastics Interest Group (IG) is open to all interested parties. If you are not already a member, make sure you are signed in to your SETAC account and then click “Join Group” near the top of this page.

Mission and Purpose

The mission of the SETAC Microplastics IG is to support the advancement of scientific research on plastics particles of various sizes now found in every part of the environment, from lakes, rivers and oceans to agricultural soils. The IG will provide an official platform for collaboration on research and management of plastic particles in the environment.

Scope

The SETAC Microplastics IG will focus on plastic particles at the macro, micro and nano scale as well as fibers.

Goals and Objectives

Goals

  • To grow the membership of the IG to include representatives from universities, government agencies and businesses working on or affected by plastic pollution
  • To work towards the development of global standards for the collection, extraction and analysis of plastics particles and as well as responses to exposure and ingestion.

Objectives

  • Compile a list of interested researchers in the field of micro-plastics, and invite them to join the IG
  • Organize an event (meeting or session) at the SETAC North America and SETAC Europe annual meetings
