2016 Award Winners - Timothy Canfield and Eugene Mancini
Share |

The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry will present Timothy J. Canfield, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Eugene Mancini, E.R. Mancini & Associates with the Herb Ward Exceptional Service Award at the 7th SETAC World Congress/SETAC North America 37th Annual Meeting on 6 November in Orlando, Florida.

This year there were two outstanding SETAC members who have served the society diligently and generously for many years. Canfield and Mancini are highly qualified and deserving winners of the Herb Ward Exceptional Service Award, so this year SETAC will be awarding co-winners of this prestigious award.

Mancini has been a dedicated SETAC member and volunteer since the early 1980s, quietly lending support to annual meetings by organizing sessions and chairing exhibit committees. Always reliable, he has co-chaired symposia, lent support to SETAC presidents and mentored next generation researchers. Mancini’s biggest mark on the society, however, has been his tireless efforts with the SETAC North America Endowment Fund. Mancini served as the Chair of the Fund Board from its establishment in 2005 until his recent departure in 2015. The fund provides long-term financial support for SETAC activities, and has made a tangible difference in the lives and careers for many young scientists. The fund has supported PhD presentation awards and travel stipends for students and early career researchers from underrepresented regions and disciplines to workshops and meetings.

Canfield established his membership in 1992, and has since served in both volunteer and elected leadership roles at the regional, national and global levels, including vice president and president at all three. Following his last elected term as the Immediate Past President of SETAC World Council, he volunteered to serve as tri-chair of the SETAC World Congress planning committee. He has served SETAC North America on the meetings committee, the membership committee both as vice chair and chair, and as the platform committee co-chair for the 2003 North America meeting in Austin, TX. At the request of the SWC, Canfield established the SETAC Global Membership committee and served as the first chair of this committee. Along with two colleagues from SETAC Europe, he established the SETAC Ecosystem Services Advisory Group. Additionally, Canfield continues to support the society publications. He is a reviewer for the peer-reviewed, scientific publication Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry and serves as the co-Editor-in-Chief of the SETAC Globe, the society newsletter.
