26th Annual OVC SETAC Meeting & Workshop

“Nanotechnology: Risks and Benefits”

 What: The OVC SETAC is requesting Abstracts for platform presentations or posters for their 26th Annual Meeting to be held in Cincinnati, Ohio on September 17th and 18th, 2009. The presentations/posters should be related to the  Nanotechnology topic but will be considered regardless of focus. The Workshop and Conference are designed to promote the dissemination of information from current nanotechnology research concerns, priorities, potential risks, and possible risk reduction strategies. This information exchange is intended to assist students, consumers, environmental scientists, manufacturers, and risk managers to appreciate the emerging risks perceived fromnanotechnology.

Costs: Professional (members) – Workshop/Meeting both - $35; Workshop only or Meeting only - $20  Students (members) Workshop/Meeting both - $20; Workshop only or Meeting only - $10

Where: The meeting will be held at United States Environmental Protection Agency Breidenback Research Building Auditorium. The facility is located at 26 W. Martin Luther King Drive immediately adjacent to the University of Cincinnati. A map follows at the end of this notice. More details will be available at a later date.

When: The Nanotechnology Workshop (Nanotechnology Primer 101) will be held on September 17, 2009 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. The Meeting and Presentations will be held on September 18th from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Attendees may opt to attend either the workshop or meeting or both.

Honors: OVC SETAC Marian Vinegar Award. This cash award is given annually at the OVC Annual Meeting to the outstanding graduate student presentation and carries with it a student membership to national SETAC (with journal), membership for a year to the OVC SETAC, and financial support for travel to the national SETAC meeting.

 Workshop:  Nanotechnology Primer 101

September 17, 2009, 1:00 to 4:00 PM

Purpose: This workshop is designed to introduce the topic of Nanotechnology, its potential applications and the environmental concerns raised by this new class of materials. This workshop will assist attendees interested in developing their own nanotechnology research program by presenting some of the challenges with working with these materials and providing an overview of the recent advances in the field of environmental nanotoxicology.

Details: Dr. David Barber of the University of Florida and Dr. Helen Poynton of the USEPA will present the workshop. This workshop is guaranteed to educate and excite you! More details regarding the Workshop Agenda, topic list, and potential speakers will be announced later. The Workshop will be followed by an OVCsponsored social event and annual bowling competition.


 Meeting: Nanotechnology: Risks and Benefits

September 18, 2009, 8:00 to 4:00 PM

Purpose: This meeting will encourage the exchange of information about the emerging recognition of potential health and environmental risks posed by societal use of nanotechnology and to propose development and implementation of appropriate sampling and analysis, data analysis, risk reduction strategies for a foundation of appropriate management responses and to promote coordination and improved working relationships among emerging toxics-related programs, scientists, and students.
