PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry is pleased to announce the appointment of Charles Menzie as Global Executive Director. Menzie, a longstanding SETAC member, has served on the SETAC World Council and the North America Board of Directors, chaired the awards committee, and was a founding member of the Contaminated Soils Advisory Group. Menzie is also the director of Exponent’s ecological and biological sciences practice at which he will continue his consulting work. He was the co-founder of Menzie-Cura, a successful firm specializing in environmental risk assessment, and he has served as an adjunct professor at Boston University, the University of Massachusetts and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Menzie brings strong managerial leadership to the society and says, “I look forward to stimulating the development of geographic unit and globally relevant scientific programs and activities around the world.”

SETAC World Council President Peter Campbell welcomes the appointment and is looking forward to the new collaboration, “Charlie understands the complex scientific issues our members in academia, business and regulatory organizations are trying to resolve.”

Menzie’s appointment follows a global search with a record number of applications and a multiphase interview process that challenged both the candidates and the evaluation committee. Campbell notes, “It is a testament to SETAC’s standing in the scientific community and as a professional society that we had a very strong pool of highly qualified and interested candidates from which to make our selection.”

Menzie’s appointment is effective 1 June 2014.
