A series of papers, the first on this subject, that publish the findings from a Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) international workshop titled "The Influence of Global Climate Change on the Scientific Foundations and Applications of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry” in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (ET&C).
These papers stem from the criticism that environmental toxicologists and chemists have been largely absent from the international debate on Global Climate Change. Human health and ecological risk assessment will become increasingly important in decisions about how best to adapt, and will require thorough assessments prior to and during any implementations. Failure to do so may leave assessors in emergency conditions with scant data to perform technically robust assessments. Because of the significance of this topic, the workshop sponsors are providing open access to all of the publications in this series on the ET&C web site.
The papers tackle the impacts of global climate change on chemical contaminants, organism acclimation and vulnerable communities as important considerations for future assessments of human and ecological risk. They address the need to consider all potential consequences, while accounting for the magnitude and duration of anticipated impacts in combination with the nature and severity of a changing climate. Practitioners must also overcome the challenges of continually shifting baseline conditions while estimating the extent of injury to resources and the extent of restoration needed as a result of the chemical effects from climate change.
