INTERACTIVE PLATFORM GUIDELINES

The Interactive Platform Sessions developed for the SETAC North America 27th Annual Meeting are intended to provide a comprehensive and interactive forum to communicate, consider, and discuss current research and thought in controversial areas of environmental science. The presenting authors need to provide a poster, attend the poster-viewing period, prepare and present a brief oral description of the paper, and serve as a panel member for the discussion period. The basic format is listed below. PLEASE STICK TO THIS SCHEDULE.

MORNING SESSIONS - ACTIVITY - AFTERNOON SESSIONS

08:00 - 09:20 am Author-attended poster viewing period 13:50 - 15:10 pm
09:20 - 10:00 am Break 15:10 - 15:50 pm
10:00 - 11:00 am Brief oral presentations 15:50 - 16:50 pm
11:00 - 11:40 am Moderated panel discussion 16:50 – 17:30 pm
13:50 - 18:30 pm Display in Poster Hall 08:00 - 13:00 pm

The poster boards will be standard 4' (1.22 meters) high by 8' (2.44 meters) wide and covered with fabric allowing the use of Velcro tabs for attachment. Velcro tabs are the preferred means of attachment but tacks and staples may also be used. The author is responsible for the set-up of the poster (15 minutes before the start of the session) and removal (immediately after the session).

Each poster has been assigned a unique number that will identify it in the Meeting Program and Abstract Book. This number will be cross-referenced to a poster panel location in the Meeting Program.

Each poster should be self-explanatory, should be readable from a distance of 6 feet (2 meters). Unless specified otherwise, letters should be at least 18 point (5 mm) high with a line thickness of at least 1 mm. Posters should consist of the following sections:

• TITLE - The title should be capitalized in a minimum of 72 point (2 cm) type. Authors and affiliations should be printed in 42 point (11mm) or larger type by using upper- and lower-case lettering as appropriate. DO NOT USE AFFILIATION LOGO EXCESSIVELY.

• ABSTRACT - Limited to 300 words and should briefly describe the work.

• INTRODUCTION - Provide background information and state the purpose of the study.

• MATERIALS & METHODS - Clearly outline experimental procedures. Where possible, use flow charts and other diagrammatic presentations.

• RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS - Keep written text to a minimum. The use of “bullets” or short phrases is often effective. Indicate the most important and relevant findings by using large graphs and figures (20 x 25 cm or larger), where possible. Use short, informative legends. Findings may be interpreted in a combined Results & Discussion section, or in a separate Discussion section.

• CONCLUSIONS - Briefly present the conclusions of the study. Again, the use of “bullets” or short phrases is effective.

The oral presentation will be limited to 6 minutes or less. The presentation should summarize the paper and any questions will be deferred to the panel discussion. Only vital background information and methodology should be presented. The purpose of the oral presentation is to provide the audience with the rationale, results, and conclusions of the research so they may participate in the panel discussion. The presentations will use PowerPoint®. BE BRIEF AND OBSERVE YOUR TIME LIMIT. Guidelines for PowerPoint are provided separately.

On the day of the IP session, presenters will also be provided with space in the main poster hall to display their posters. This will be during the morning for IP sessions that occur in the afternoon and during the afternoon for IP session that occur in the morning.
