The SETAC North America Endowment Fund
The SETAC North America (SETAC NA) Endowment Fund was established in 2005 to develop and grow invested funds in order to annually generate investment proceeds for SETAC’s use in supporting technical, scientific and educational activities in perpetuity. Contributions to the Fund are anticipated through a combination of current and planned giving by SETAC members, their home organizations and other philanthropic organizations. The Endowment Fund has reached a level of $21,000 but must achieve an initial principal threshold of $50,000 before annual proceeds can be committed to Society projects. We are engaged in a capital campaign to reach and exceed this threshold as soon as possible and we need your support to accomplish this task.
The Board of Trustees of the SETAC NA Endowment Fund urge you to financially support the Fund to ensure an ongoing commitment to our Society’s important mission…to encourage responsible environmental management decision-making informed by sound environmental science principles. If every SETAC member in North America commits $10 to this endeavor, we will accomplish our immediate objective!
How the Fund Operates
The Fund Board of Trustees operates within the SETAC NA Development Committee and the annually-audited Fund will be managed by the SETAC NA Secretary-Treasurer. As indicated, once the minimum investment level is reached, income from the invested principal of the Fund will be available on an annual basis to support relevant Society activities. SETAC North America, in consultation with the Endowment Fund Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors will have the authority to accept and receive current and planned gifts, grants and contributions to enhance the Endowment Fund principal. Two substantial planned gifts (bequests) have already been committed to the Fund from two senior Society members and one member has committed a portion of future proceeds from book sales to the Fund. This is a great start to the campaign but we need much broader membership financial support to achieve our initial goal and continue to grow the Fund.
With proper financial support, the Endowment Fund principal will continuously grow generating annual support for worthy projects including student functions, specialty symposia, sessions, briefings and annual meeting activities so long as these activities are consistent with the Society’s mission. The amount of support depends upon the size of the Fund.
Board Challenge Grant
Please join the Development Committee and Endowment Fund Board of Trustees in achieving the Fund’s initial threshold by making a contribution to the Fund now. The Fund Board members hereby issue a Challenge Grant of $5,000 to the NA membership to assure your support. This one-for-two Grant pledges one dollar of support from the Board for every two dollars contributed to the Endowment Fund by members for a total Board pledge of up to $5,000. This Grant will be in place through 2007. Your contribution is tax-deductible, will assure ongoing support of the Society’s mission and will assist related fundraising efforts by demonstrating a significant level of internal SETAC member support.
