18 September 2003
The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry
(SETAC) has elected Dr. James T. Oris as vice president
of SETAC North America for 2004.
The election was held in Pensacola, Fla., at the September
meeting of the SETAC North America board of directors.
Oris will serve as vice president for one year beginning
November 2003, after which he will become president
of SETAC North America.
Oris became involved in SETAC as a student and has
been active for more than 15 years. He is presently
a member of the SETAC North America board of directors.
Among his credits, Oris has been on the editorial review
boards of eight journals, six books and nine granting
agencies, was editor for the aquatic toxicology section
in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, and has served
as president of the Ohio Valley Regional Chapter of
SETAC. He is a well-published researcher, having published
nearly 60 peer-reviewed scientific research articles
and more than 120 abstracts.
Oris received a bachelor's degree in biology from Wittenberg
University in 1979 and a doctorate in environmental
toxicology from Michigan State University in 1985. He
is currently a professor at the Miami University Department
of Zoology in Oxford, Ohio, and co-director of the Center
for Environmental Toxicology and Statistics at the university.
His areas of research interest center around the ecological
toxicology of organic chemicals in aquatic systems with
a primary focus on the study of the fate and effects
of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in freshwater systems.
As vice president of SETAC North America, Oris will
serve on the Executive Committee and will chair the
Long-Range Planning Committee, which is responsible
for keeping the strategic plan of SETAC North America
current and for assessing future trends of the science
and the society. As president, he will lead a 15-person
board of directors responsible to approximately 3,500
SETAC members in North America, which oversees policy
and program decisions and maintains fiscal responsibility
for an annual budget of more than $2 million.
Oris will continue to serve on the Executive Committee
as immediate past-president after his term as president.
Oris said that one of his goals is to continue to enhance
the participation and education of students in SETAC.
He also hopes to reinforce SETAC's role as the premier
society for professionals dedicated to "Environmental
quality through science®" by continuing development
of a truly global society that presents an internationally
respected, scientifically sound voice in the environmental
science and policy arenas.
