Annual meeting address Northwest
Region Issues
14 November 2004
Some activities make your
daily life easy, but those same activities can have
an environmental impact in your backyard. Whether
it is the pesticide you use on your lawn, the medicine
you took this morning, or the detergent you use to wash
your blue jeans. These daily actions make your
life easy, but there is a lasting impact on the environment
for everything you do.
This year, during the
Fourth SETAC World Congress and 25th Annual Meeting
in North America in Portland, Ore., Nov. 14-18, 2004,
topics will be discussed that are related or are of
importance to Portland, Ore. and the surrounding areas.
Some topics of importance
that will be specific to the Pacific Northwest region
include the Columbia River and estuary, the coastal
Washington waters and lakes of the Seattle area, and
the Willamette River. The San Joaquin River, located
in California, will also be discussed. In addition,
pesticides in the Pacific Northwest will be presented,
as well as the Portland Harbor Superfund Site Investigation.
With more than 2,100 presentations,
the meeting is expected to bring together nearly 2,500
individuals from around the world. The meeting
theme is “SETAC: 25 Years of Interdisciplinary
Science Serving Global Society.” The meeting
will mark the transition from regional to international
perspectives and the emergence of SETAC as a premier
global society.
Issues that affect environmental
quality will be addressed through keynote speakers,
platform sessions, interactive platform sessions, poster
sessions and a variety of professional development courses.
Numerous activities and social events are also scheduled
to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Society.
SETAC is a not-for-profit,
worldwide professional society consisting of individuals
and institutions dedicated to the study, analysis, and
