2007 SETAC/Weston Solution Environmental Chemistry Award
10/23/2007
The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry is delighted to announce Charles Wong as the recipient of the 2007 SETAC/Weston Solution Environmental Chemistry Award. This honor is awarded annually to pay tribute to the founder of Roy F. Weston, Inc.
Wong has developed techniques to separate PCB atropisomers (rotational enantiomers) and has become the world’s leader in the analytical and environmental chemistry of chiral PCBs. His groundbreaking research provided the first hard evidence that PCBs do not just passively bioaccumulate in the lower food chain, but they undergo metabolic transformations as well. Wong’s work has shown that chiral PCBs are metabolized in fish and macroinvertebrates. Prior to his work, it was thought that these organisms had little metabolic capability to transform PCBs.
The award is intended to encourage the advancement of environmental problem solving and to support the professional development of young scientists. The award is given to a scientist under the age of 40 for contributions made to the field of environmental chemistry.
SETAC is a not-for-profit worldwide professional society of individuals and institutions dedicated to the study, analysis, and solution of environmental problems, the management and regulation of natural resources, environmental education, and research and development. Its membership numbers more than 5000 from 92 countries, and the Society publishes two renowned journals, Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry and Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management -AED
