2007 SETAC/ET&C Best Student Paper Award
10/23/2007
The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry is delighted to announce Jonathan Roland as the recipient of the 2007 SETAC/ET&C Best Student Paper Award. The award is given annually to a SETAC member who served as lead author of a paper reporting non-postdoctoral research performed as a student, and published in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.
Roland’s paper, Using Mummichog (Fundulus Heteroclitus) Arrays to Monitor the Effectiveness of Remediation at a Superfund Site in Charleston, South Carolina, USA, was selected with a good degree of confidence: it was rated the best paper in all four groups in which it was evaluated. Roland investigated the suitability of a highly innovative approach (a DNA microarray for mummichogs) to monitor the effectiveness of site remediation. He is a student at the University of Texas El-Paso and hopes to soon earn his doctorate.
All manuscripts submitted are graded on originality, participation, relevancy and manuscript presentation, along with the student's capability in addressing peer reviewers' comments. All reviewers remarked that this was an innovative and excellent study that should have many applications for environmental quality assessments.
SETAC is a not-for-profit worldwide professional society of individuals and institutions dedicated to the study, analysis, and solution of environmental problems, the management and regulation of natural resources, environmental education, and research and development. Its membership numbers more than 5000 from 92 countries, and the Society publishes two renowned journals, Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry and Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management. -AED
