LCA Mission Statement

The mission of the SETAC North America LCA Interest Group is to advance the science, practice, and application of LCAs to reduce the resource consumption and environmental burdens associated with products, packaging, processes, or activities.

To achieve this mission, the SETAC North America LCA Interest Group will:

  1. Serve as a focal point to provide a broad-based forum for the identification, resolution, and communication of issues regarding Life Cycle Assessment and related topics in North America and globally; and
  2. Facilitate, coordinate, and provide guidance for the development, implementation, and communication of LCA and its use in North America.
  3. Participate, through the LCA Global Coordinating Group, in expanding the SETAC LCA Community globally and bringing expertise to geographic units of SETAC where LCA is an emerging practice.

Core tasks include planning and organizing LCA sessions and conferences (such as the Annual SETAC North America Meeting), coordination of topical working groups, and preparation of SETAC LCA publications.

Current Steering Committee Members

Hot Topics and Current Activities

The Interest Group is actively working on a Capability Roadmap for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). One section has been completed concerning using LCA for decision making and can be accessed here: RoadMap_Supporting Decision Makers with LCA

A subgroup is now discussing how to move forward with initiating research to address the identified needs in the roadmap and how to secure funding for those projects through a combination of sources.

Three new working groups have just started focusing on the following topics:

  • Better handling ill-characterized uncertainty
  • Sharing Life Cycle Inventory data to increase the availability of Meeting data, and
  • Inventory model description and revision.

Meetings (generally by phone or web conference) occur approximately once per month for 1-1.5 hours. For more information contact the Interest Group chair.
