The
Population-Level Workgroup formed under the SETAC Ecological Risk
Assessment
Advisory Group (ERAAG) after the SETAC-2001 debates on
"Populations."
The Workgroup hopes to improve the use of population-level tools in
ecological
risk assessment, and is actively seeking to expand membership to anyone
interested. The Workgroup was very busy in 2002 writing Learned
Discourses,
participating in a 2002 SETAC interactive poster session, developing
this
website, and having the first open meeting (during the 2002 SETAC
conference). Learned discourses
and interactive
poster session topics are posted on this website. 2003 has been
even
busier, with more on the horizon.
POPULATION
ERA PELLSTON
WORKSHOP
Population
Workgroup members prepared a SETAC Pellston workshop proposal that was
approved by the SETAC Board of Directors (BoD) in January of
2003.
Workgroup members requested that the SETAC BoD allow the use of the
Internet
for broad based participation in this Pellston workshop. The
SETAC
BoD approved this request. For information on how you can
participate
in the Population ERA Pellston effort via the Internet, click
here.
POPULATION
ERA WORKGROUP OPEN
MEETING(S)
The
first Population ERA Workgroup open meeting was held in Salt Lake City
during
the
SETAC 2002, and a second was held in Austin during SETAC 2003.
Participants in this meeting grappled with
a number of questions, but did not arrive at any answers. Many of
the questions are summarized below. We did identify a variety of
ways that these issues might be addressed. Ideas included
future
SETAC short courses, the development of case studies, and future
Learned
Discourses. It was noted that case studies should have a broad
perspective
that can be used to determine the percent of a population-level problem
related to chemical contamination. All ideas to
address the following questions will be considered:
- When is
it appropriate to do a population-level ERA?
- What might
be expected of a population-level ERA?
- What population
parameters provide the most useful endpoints?
- How is
a population defined?
- How can
population-level effects be managed?
- What species
should be used?
- How does
the science fit with the political challenges?
The
book that is being written as part of the Pellston Population ERA
effort will address many of these topics. An overview of the book
was presented at an interactive poster session during SETAC 2003 in
Austin, TX. The posters are available on this website and there
is opportunity to provide input into the book by providing comments on
these posters – click here.
Further efforts from the Population Workgroup membership will enhance
our understanding of this topic. For example, a current effort of
the Population Workgroup is the compilation of studies and citations
that demonstrate population-level ERAs. Ultimately, to the extent
feasible, the Population Workgroup would like to compile a repository
of this information (on this website if possible). If you have
information regarding a population-level ERA, or would like more
information about what has been compiled to date, please contact Mike Thompson.
New efforts related to the Population Workgroup will be posted on this
website as they become organized and implemented. Workgroup
members are encouraged to take leadership positions on new
efforts! Contact one of the workgroup chairs to get started.
EMAILS
and CONFERENCE CALLS
The
Population Workgroup can communicate via emails and conference
calls.
To date, these efforts have been focused toward the Pellston Workshop,
but we would like to expand this communication. If you would like
to join the Population Workgroup email list, and if you have ideas
related
to this topic (e.g., a proposed Learned Discourses) please contact Mary
Sorensen.
INTERACTIVE
POSTER SESSION – SETAC 2003
An
Interactive Poster session that provides a technical overview of the
Population-Level
ERA Pellston Workshop was presented during SETAC 2003 in Austin,
TX. See the poster abstracts and download posters of interest - click
