Carolinas
SETAC 2005 Meeting Summary
The
2005 annual meeting of the Carolinas Chapter of the
Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry
was held March 31st - April 2nd in Raleigh, NC. The
meeting was hosted by the NC State University Department
of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology. Local NCSU
organizers were Chris Hofelt and Robert Bringolf.
Meeting sponsors were Bayer CropScience, BASF, Syngenta,
Arcadis, and Secaps Environmental Inc. Many thanks
to both our local organizers and sponsors for a terrific
meeting!
We
had a great meeting turnout, with 81 members in attendance.
The meeting began with a short course titled “Introduction
to GIS”. Jane Staveley gave a national SETAC
overview presentation and then there was a special
keynote address by Dr. Gerald LeBlanc (Department
of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology, NCSU) titled
“Environmental Signaling: Sex is not just in
the genes”. The technical sessions consisted
of 26 poster and 19 platform presentations.
There
were 13 student platforms and 18 student posters.
The winners of the student presentation awards were;
for best platform: 1st place, Wade Lehmann (NCSU),
2nd place, Cynthia Rider (NCSU), 3rd place, Robin
Sternberg (NCSU), and for best poster: 1st place,
Faith Wiley (Clemson University), 2nd place, Joanne
Gold (undergraduate, UNC-Wilmington), 3rd place, Katrina
White (NCSU). Each student received a cash award and
choice of a SETAC book.
The
Friday evening social was held at the NCSU University
Club picnic area. Members enjoyed good Carolina barbeque,
but no volley ball match was played, thus the ball
remains with North Carolina until next year. Next
year’s CSETAC meeting will be held in Clemson,
SC. This year’s national SETAC meeting will
be held November 13-17, 2005 in Baltimore, MD (Abstract
deadline is June 3rd).
