CAG September Update

Posted By Elin M. Ulrich, Tuesday, September 04, 2012
Greetings!
This is the September edition of the Chemistry Advisory Group (CAG) monthly update. In this update:
1. SETAC-ACS graduate student exchange deadline September 14th
2. Call for volunteer referees and judges for SETAC-ACS exchange award
3. Nominations to serve on the CAG Steering Committee
4. Check out and use the Chemistry AG webpage

1. SETAC-ACS graduate student exchange deadline September 14th
Graduate student chemists are encouraged to apply for the SETAC-ACS exchange award. The winner will receive travel money and an invitation to present at a 2013 American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting in the ACS Environment Division (ENVR). Graduate advisors-- please share this information with your students that have an accepted presentations for the Long Beach SETAC meeting (November 11-15, 2012). Additional information is available at http://www.setac.org/?page=SNAAwardsSACSENVR.

To apply, the following materials must be submitted electronically to the Pensacola Office no later than September 14, 2012. Send all materials to the attention of Laura Swanson (laura.swanson@setac.org). Failure to meet the deadline or to follow instructions invalidates the application. Required application materials include:
* Applicant must provide a high-quality abstract. (This abstract should be a copy of the abstract submitted for that year's SETAC North America annual meeting.)
* A letter of endorsement by the applicant's faculty advisor (a 1-sided, single page maximum).
* Curriculum vitae (résumé) of the applicant (1-sided, single page maximum).
* A short statement (1 paragraph) from the applicant on why their research is suitable for the SETAC-ACS exchange program.

2. Call for volunteer referees and judges for SETAC-ACS exchange award
After receiving applications for the SETAC-ACS exchange award, materials will be reviewed by a panel of subject matter experts within SETAC North America. Authors of the 5 most highly ranked abstracts will be judged in person at the SETAC North America Annual Meeting. If you can assist CAG by reviewing applications in late September or judging presentations in Long Beach in November, please contact the CSC chair Elin Ulrich (ulrich.elin@epa.gov). To avoid a potential conflict of interest, please do not volunteer if you are advising or mentoring a student who will apply.

3. Nominations to serve on the CAG Steering Committee
The Chemistry Steering Committee (CSC) will be comprised of at least 10 and no more than 15 organizers that are SETAC members in good standing. These members shall be representative of the three sectors (government, industry, and academia). Additionally, these members shall be representative of the three countries comprising SETAC’s North American geographic unit (Canada, United States, and Mexico). Balance will be sought across the three stakeholder affiliations (first priority) and three geographic regions (second priority). The Chemistry Advisory Group leadership will serve a three year term. Terms begin and end at the annual SETAC North America (SETAC NA) meeting in November. Any CSC member who misses 4 consecutive meetings or conference calls without prior notice will be released from their leadership duties. The CSC currently meets monthly via teleconference on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 11:30am ET/8:30am PT.

We anticipate that 1 to 6 slots will be open for the CSC in 2013. Based on the incumbent CSC membership, we will especially target government and industry representatives from Canada and Mexico to maintain balance. If you are interested in serving or would like to nominate someone, please contact the CSC chair Elin Ulrich (ulrich.elin@epa.gov). Self nominations are accepted (and encouraged).
